Hello all... I am a new member and needing help with a 2 hp johnson. It has seen little use and when I bought it last year it the carb was all gummed up. I put an ounce of gum-out in the tank and soon had it running...for a while. On a fishing trip it quit and had not run since. I rebuilt the carb and it always starts, but will not stay running. If it has not been run for a while it will start and run roughly for 30-45 seconds then die. I can always get it to start on the next pull, but dies again after a few seconds. I am really not new to mechanics, but have no boat motor experience. Currently suffering from a very bruised ego. If this was a 200 hp monster it wouldn't bother me, but this little motor has me pulling hair I can't spare.
Any help would be appreciated.

Did you check for water in the fuel system?
Did you run a compression test?

I did check for water in the gas, none found but changed it anyway. Compression was NOT checked...don't have a gauge. It does turn over with some difficulty.
As stated in original post, it starts every time but will only run for at most 30-40 seconds and slowly loses rpms and dies. On second pull it will again start but only run for a few secons again, usually less than the first attempt. I will try to get my hands on a compression tester.
Thanks for the response!
