Hi all,
Great day for boating. After 5 or so hours of on/off running today, at 30MPH the engine died. Checked the engine and the starter would not engage. Hit starter with a hammer and it started to engage again, but the engine seems like it is backfiring. Should I replace the starter anyway?
Is the engine flooded?
Engine never did start again, got towed back!

frankk,

Don't condemn your engine or starter, just yet.

Lubricate the starter bendix shaft with some WD-40. Walk the pinion gear up and down, by hand, and keep spraying the WD-40.

Also remove both ends of the battery cables. (yes, that means the engine end of the cables too). Make sure they are clean and tight.

OUCH!!!! Frank...hammers is a no no on starters. Good way to break the magnets inside. Then ya' really troubles.

Lets start from scratch....The starter didn't engage...do you mean the starter wouldn't turn over or the bendix wouldn't jump up into the flywheel?

If the bendix won't jump, put a few drops of WD-40 on the bendix shaft and roll it around a bit. Usually gets them jumping.

If the starter won't turn, check electrical connections first. Listen for the click of the solenoid. If starter still won't turn, jump the large post on the starter solenoid. This makes a direct link to the battery. If starter still won't turn, starter needs an over haul.

When was the engine last given a good going over? Like compression, ignition checked out, and carbs rebuilt.

The starter didn't cause the engine to die.

How about spark?

any gas?

Finally got a chance to check the motor out.
Used WD-40 on the shaft of the starter, now slides up and down easily...
I used the bulb to prime the engine, started after 10 seconds of cranking, MODULE SEEMS GOOD!
Engine died after 10 to 20 seconds of running.
Decided to check the filter on the engine, it has a little crud in it. Running (don't tell wife) to boat shop tomorrow, and pick up rebuild kit, new bulb and a few hoses.
Now to figure out how to drain the tank. It has only about 5 gallons left in it.
Perhaps just the tank has bad gas. Any other precautions on draining the tank?
Frank
