How did the coils look?? Do they have hair line cracks?? If they do have the cracks, it's time to replace them along with the points and condensers too. You did remove the plug, re-attach the plug wire to the spark plug and hold the plug body against the block, then pulled the rope, right??

Change the coils. That sounds like the problem. I just had to change them on my 1955 Johnson 10hp. If they get cracks, moisture gets in and it won't fire. Sometimes they will still fire when dry but it is not enough.

Yup, the coils are toast, replace them. They are probably arcing to ground, ergo, no spark.

Hi Harley,
You should be able to get the coils (and replace condensers while you're in there) from your local Johnrude dealer. Coil OEM #582995, or NAPA (Sierra aftermarket) #18-5181. Condenser #580321 or #18-5199. If you want to do the points, too, #580148 or #18-5156, respectively.
I would also replace the waterpump impeller while you're at it. OEM# 277181, Sierra #18-3001.
- Scott
