I am restoring a 1966 Seahorse 6hp. It has a plastic 2-blade prop on it now. I'd like to replace it with an aluminum prop. Should I try to find a 3-blade?? What pitch would be best for this size motor? Also, has anyone found any good place to get replacement hood decals?
**Curious...what is the difference between the newer 6hp and 8 hp Johnsons? All specs (bore/stroke/displacement, etc.) are the same. Is the only difference in the carbs? (Same for 9.9s and 15s, I guess). Just wondering.....

The engine originally came with a 8 x 7 1/4, 2 bladed aluminum prop. Apparently, no other props were offered.
Picture.
Information.
From the Old OMC Site.

Sorry, I don't know the difference between the 8 and 6. I expect you'll find exhaust tuning and rpms contribute though. Mabey even the ignition (spark advance).
Good luck with the restoration!

Re: Restoring a 1966 Johnson 6hp Seahorse

Thanks for the info...I was able to locate the decals. This motor will primarily be used on a 12ft. fishing boat (very light). I found a 3-blade 81/4 X 81/2 prop on this site. This should work out pretty good for this combo, I would assume. Another quick question, though. I have another Johnson O/B (mid 80's 15hp.). The gas tank for this motor was stored for quite a while, and has alot of moisture and corrosion inside. Is there anything that I can use to clean it out? It doesn't even want to prime up when I pump the bulb - probably junk in the pick-up. Any suggestions?

Hello.
Empty the old gas out and if you can take the pickup out and clean thoroughly.Take a handful of roofing nails and dump 'em in the tank add maybe a pint of fresh gas. Close the tank and then, shake the living daylights out of it.Repeat this a few times. This should help you get rid of loose corroded pieces.
Clean and rinse with gas and then reinstall your pickup.
Good luck.

The 1966 6 hp is a good motor. I had one on a 17' square stern canoe and it was to much power,
