Shift Lever

I have a 54 or 55 7.5 horse evinrude. The shift lever does not shift. It moves freely back and forth. I have the repair manual and minimal mechanical skills. Should I attempt to repair this myself. If not, can you give me a rough guess of how much a repair like this might cost?<br /><br />Thank you

Terry,<br /><br />With the manual, it should not be hard at all.<br /><br />The linkage must have come loose somewhere. If on top, I believe it requires a powerhead removal, but it's not difficult.

DJohns is right. You have to remove the powerhead. There should be 6 head screws I believe. The head gasket is available from your Evinrude dealer. The shift shaft has threads and a nut on top if it is like the '57. I can't gauranty it is the same since my manual only goes back to 1956. Not a lot of dealers will work on a motor that old for a number of reasons including the repair price being over the value of the motor. With minimal skill, some good tools and a manual, you can fix it yourself and still have an excellent working motor. While you have the head off, it would be a good time to replace the impellor since that requires a head removal also. <br /><br />If you want to have some exact details on how the shift lever is connected for that model, post your question and model here.
