I have recently acquired a 1957 18hp, ordered the shop manual this morning. Took it to the lake for a test ride yesterday. The electric start worked great, but wanted to test the pull start. It pull started fine; however, later in the day after driving around for a while, I noticed the pull cord hanging about a foot out of the engine. While the engine was running, I pulled on it gently, no resistance or recoil. So now I have a the pull handle/rope fully extended... How do I get this recoiled?

Any help much appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds as though your recoil spring broke, CG, or maybe just jumped the pin.

Do not attempt to service it until you get your manual. It is not difficult if you use the manual, but is both difficult and dangerous without instructions.

When you get ready, wear heavy gloves and safety glasses.

Good luck. :)
