Is there a way to remove a starter drive assembly without taking the armeture out of the starter housing? I have a 1983 Johnson 175 with the starter off the boat. The drive assembly is pretty worn out and is binding on the flywheel. Does anyone know of a good place to get parts like this?
393285 - Nut,spring and spacer
387683 - drive assembly
Thanks

You might have to pull the flywheel to get the nut off or unbolt the starter from the engine. I do not believe that you should have to remove the armature.

TMD

I already have the starter off the boat and need to remove and replace the drive assembly. The nut will not loosen without holding the shaft. The manual calls out for removing the armeture but I'd rather not - thanks for the reply

Stocky.... I simply use a 1/4" drive air impact tool to remove or replace the bendix drive nut.
