1972 Lark 50 Lower Unit problem

I was getting up onto a plane when my engine made a "Clunck" sound, my boat lost power and the engine reved up. When the RPM's came back down I regained some power. I have tested the hub and it is good. I have also drained the lower unit and saw small metal particles in the fluid. What happened to my lower unit?
