i stripped out foward & pinion gear got new gears clymers shop manual says to shim drive shaft when you replace pinion gear that this is precision.or will have gear failure again soon.is the only way to shim and get it right is to have omc universal shim tool & gauge? or is there a way i can do it?don't want to have to take it apart again.

I'd be curios as to why the gears stripped. Also should reverse be replaced as well ? All three gears mesh at all times.
Any way, take the drive shaft, bearing carrier (driveshaft), pinion gear and nut to the local shop. They have the tool you mention, and can gauge it and shim it properly.
DHP

A good dealer should do it while you wait for it. Check service bulletins, there were changes in the tool and spec changes on some of the 40/50 engines.
