Default What year is Evinrude & Fuel Pump spitting fuel out hole...

Have Evinrude m/n: 28202 C & s/n: 04268 Anyone know the year/specs??The fuel pump is spitting fuel out a small hole in the middle of the pump body. What is causing that??? If failing, where can I get rebuild kit and/or pump??Thanks.

It's a 1962 28 hp engine.I suspect the fuel leak is probably a failed diaphragm.Local dealer may be able to help with part or try web page

Ditto on the leaking diaphram - there's not much else it could be if it's coming out of that hole.Get the rebuild kit, and laugh your way to the bank. It's cheaper than any complete fuel pump, and that's just about the only rebuildable OMC fuel pump.Old style fuel pump w/ Glass rebuild kitOMC Part# 379777Napa Autoparts can get you an aftermarket kit from their Marine Catalog, Sierra Part# 18-7801

Thanks all for the info...I got the 28hp Evinrude on an old 24' Harris Flote Boat this summer. It is the cleanest old engine of that type I have ever seen. It fires up on the first turn of the key and has been working well. The fuel spitting out the vent hole of the fuel pump just started this last week.I'm heading to NAPA this morning.

Mr. Moir - a followup please...I called the local NAPA and their Sierra catalog only goes back to 1972. I reckon I'll see if a local marine dealer can order the OMC part.I saw a reply you posted to someone saying that pre-64 (Evinrude or Johnson?) engines use 24:1 fuel/oil ratio. I've been using 50:1. Should I be using 24:1 on Evinrude 28hp 1962 (m/n: 28202 C s/n: 04268)or stay with 50:1Thanks.

That's a real judgement call for your engine. I've got a RX-10 outboard (Johnson version of yours), a RX-11 (for parts), and a RX-12 service manual ('64, 50:1 ratio). I'll be damned if I can find a significant difference between the engines. All the manufacturing tolerances are the same, etc, but my ('64 OEM OMC) manual has a note stating "Mixture for 1963 motors after break in period should be the same as used during break in period - 1 quart of oil to 6 gallons of gasoline."Further complicating things is that maddening post by Joe Reeves where he mentions a lost bulletin allowing old engines to run 50:1. Read it here for yourself. Your engine is fully needle roller bearing equipped, by the way. Then again, a little extra oil never hurt an engine...

I should have mentioned somthing in my previous post. There was a design change on those pumps after your engine was built to use a larger cap on the long spring (you'll see what I mean when you disassemble). The small cap had a habit of working it's way loose and peircing the diaphram. I'm not sure if the Sierra kit comes with a new spring and cap. I'm pretty sure the OMC kit does though. Anyway, if you still have a small cap, make sure the repair kit comes with a new spring and cap before laying out some cash.
