Evinrude poping out of gear

I have an Evinrude 9-1/2 HP ; Sportwin ;
Model # 9722M ; Serial # E02855. I read the example in the forum for the 55 HP poping out of gear and I already did the suggested change of oil in the lower case. The reason I originally changed the oil was that when I checked it after it originally popped out of gear, the oil was white, so I knew it had water in it. I took the boat fishing and the motor ran like a champ for about a mile and then would only run at a very low RPM. Can this problem be fixed?

Re: Evinrude poping out of gear

Follow papasage's advice. Just to elaborate, you remove a spark plug lead and ground it to the engine to determine if that cylinder is firing. If there's no change in how the engine operates (rpms) then that plug is not firing.
I'd keep a close eye on the L/U oil, since you had water in it before, you might have a leak in it. The leak may have been the gaskets on the L/U oil fill or vent screws though.

Re: Evinrude poping out of gear

Again, my Evinrude 9-1/2 HP, Sportwin 1967
Model # 9722M motor is "popping" out of gear, or at least seems to be popping out of gear after the motor has warmed up. "Papasage", I tried your test to see if both cylinders were firing by grounding them to the block, and I got spark. So then ,after I started the motor, I left it running and took off one of the two plug wires and the motor still ran. Same thing with the other spark plug wire. Can the motor run with a "dying" coil ? Do I have to take the coils out to be tested ?
