I recently purchased my first outboard motor (older 20hp johnson). The pull cord broke just below the handle. I've had chainsaws uncoil on me before and I am wondering if this is something i can do myself, or if I should take it to some one?

Do,nt try this without some guidance. That spring is alot bigger and just waiting to get you. This can be a frustrating repair so if you chose to farm it out do not be surprised to get a bid of a couple hours. If you do it yourself you'll see why.

Hello.
If this engine is from between '66 and '70 you need a 75 3/4 inch starter rope safety glasses some simple tools (Vise grip)and most definitely a manual that does not just give specifications ,but explains how to do it.
I like seloc because it takes you by the hand and gets you to where you can safely do it yourself.
good luck.

Re: PULL CORD BROKE

EJ, Have a 75 Johnson 15 that broke the rope inside and along with the help of a clymers manual I managed to fix it in about 2 hrs. Just use some common sense and a manual. Good luck.
