Just a couple of quick questions for those of you who know what they are doing, and the value of certain outboards:

I just bought a 1966 Johnson 20 hp (tiller), w/gas tank, roll aroung stand and original owner's manual for $100.00. The older gentleman I puchased it from said it had been stored in his garage for about (2) years, and that he never used it. He continued by telling me a friend of his gave it to him who also had rarely used it. Apparently this motor has set for 10 or 12 years without being used. I'll tell you that it does appear to be in very good condition considering it's a 1966. Now, my questions:

1-Did I make a good purchase and what is thia motor worth?

2-How much trouble will I have locating normal repair parts and where should I shop?

3-As an older motor, will it truly run at a 20 hp,or would it be closer to today's 15 hp motors?

4-I am very mechanically inclined, and I have had a pretty good amount of experience with an older 9.9 motor, but I need some sound advise as to how I should proceed with cylinder lubrication, carb cleaning, etc, to insure this motor is prepared to come back to life?? Thanks in advance for your input!!!!

Bill

You really need to get it running to qualitatively answer that question ... but from what you describe, sounds like a 200 buck motor easy

what to do, what to do ...

what you should do

yank carb, clean it in carb solvent, blow out passages

new impeller

replace head gasket - some say do it, others say no

fresh plugs

what I would do

replace impeller - might as well, they are cheap insurance against smoking that old timer

plop her in some water with fresh plugs, fresh fuel at 24 to 1 initially, which will give her plenty of lube to get her used to running again

shes going to smoke a bit with that mixture, dont worry about it

see if the carb adjusts down to a smooth idle

is she pumping plenty of water? running smoothly?

GOOD! take her out on the lake and run it at speed
