Did I fry my 71 Johnson 125

My control box alarm went off when my engine overheated, I didn't run it after this, I haven't tried to start it since. Has this happened to anyone and if so was did you have any damage?

do a compression check, if thats good i would get a new impeller, then see if it will fire up and stay cool. keep a close check on this so if there are further problems you do add more damage. Thats what i'd do. I am sure some othere here may have some even better steps to check it.
