1985 vro 90 evinrude bad piston and ring

I pulled the head and found a badly damaged piston with the ring gone. The engine runs good, despite the bad cylinder. Do I need to pull the power head to replace the piston? it feels like the wrist pin is bad

Ah, sounds like you are in the same boat (pun intended) as 4fun.

Yes the powerhead needs to come off. A teardown and a machine shop will be needed.

Now, to prevent a repeat performance we need to look at what caused the ring to break. tell us more about your rig and how its set up. If the top rpm is in the low 5000 range we need to get that corrected. Your target top rpm is 5800 with an average load.
