Johnson kicks out at full throttle

I tried to post this before but something must have happened cause I can't find it. I have a 1963 40 H.P. Electramatic Johnson that I just took out today for the first time. It wouldn't go into reverse but the engine would rev up. Well I already had the boat in the water and forward was working so I headed out to see what else. When I got out into the open and pushed the throttle all the way forward it was fine for about 3 seconds the it stopped moving but the engine was at full rev. I backed off of it and it kicked back in. I tried it again and the same thing. Next I eased up on it and it seems to be kicking out just past half throttle. I read in one post about making sure there is plenty of fluid in the lower unit and I had checked that right before I took it out. Any ideals

Sounds to me like your propeller has a spun hub.

If the gear engagement dogs and slots are worn it can do that.
