I would like to know the year of my 25hp johnson outboard. The model# is RDE-17R, the serial# is 1328017. What is the fuel mix for it?

Joe,

You're saying it's okay to run my 55' 25HP Sea King (same thing as the Johnson) at 50:1???
(I currently run 32:1)

AJY

Re: old johnson seahorse

Fuel/oil mixtures depend on the bearing setup of many engines. OMC once came out with a bulletin that stated that all of their engines, past, present, and future models, could run on the 50/1 mixture, excepting the 1957 7.5hp model.

Unfortunately I cannot locate that bulletin, but should I come across it someday, I'll post it.

A rule of thumb that is taken by many as gospel is that any engine that consists of all roller and/or needle bearings can use the 50/1 mixture, and that any engine that has what is normally refered to as a babbit (bronze etc) bearing incorporated within its structure would use the older mixtures.

Bottom line is to play it safe, oil doesn't cost that much as compared to the engine.
