tilt/trim, tach gauges dont work

I have a 83 ranger 373-v with an 84 johnson 150 gt vro and both the trim/tilt gauges and the tach do not work this is my frist boat so i need some help with trouble shooting these gauges if anybody could list off some steps to get me going in the right derection i would be very greatfull :)

Start by cleaning all contacts and checking the fuses...<br /><br />Rich

ruby - check to see if the sender for the trim/tilt is free. Tilt the motor up and look for a device with a lever and a spring on the lever post by the trim/tilt hydralic cylinders. They get stuck and bind up easily. <br /><br />They are useless in my opinion - all you have to do is look at you motor and I want to see the prop wash anyway.

i found the prob with the trim gauge. It is the sending unit. i think the tach works when i trun the ingnition on it goes from flooting around 1or 2000 rpm's to 0 so i assumed the tach is good but there is something wrong with the tach lead or what ever sends it the signal. were do i look
