Hi, i have a 1963 johnson 28hp motor and when i decided to change the lower unit oil, i accidentally removed the shift linkage pin thinking it was the bottom oil plug. (yes, this is the 1st time i've ever changed the oil). so i got the metal thing the falls down back up so the pin can be screwed back in. but now the shifter is stuck in reverse, and won't shift even to neutral when the engine is turned over (not started). just wondering before i go start it up and destroy something, did some piece in the lower unit fall out of place, thus requiring the removal of the lower unit? i noticed in another post that when ya start the engine the drive gear goes back where it should. oh ya, when i just put the screw back in without screwing it in and trying to shift, it seems to be putting pressure downwards (towards the floor) on the screw. thanks in advance, andy

btw, the whole entire thing worked perfectly, up until today.

Re: 1963 Johnson shift linkage problem

Hello.
First make sure all the oil is out of your lower unit. This time use the the other screw.
Now take out the phillips screw and get a thin nail.Play carefully with the shifter and you have a fair chance, looking through the screw hole to see the small hole that is in the bottom end of the shaft. If you do,stick the nail in there so you can get it exactly in the right place. Now put the screw in and if everything is in place you should be able to shift.
If this does not work, then you will have drop the lower unit and open it.
It is a good idea to get a hand book of sorts. If you are not used to deal with manuals, then seloc #1 will be great for you.It will tell you step by step what to do.It is especially good for beginners.
Good luck.
