Hello everyone. I have a 1982 Johnson 2HP that I picked up at a yard sale. She turns over on the 5th pull and idles fine but she makes a very strange tapping/grinding noice coming from the flywheel area. Almost sounds like a bearing is going bad? Has anyone experienced anything like this before or does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this noise?

Hi,

Try taking the cover (with embedded starter recoil) off. Maybe the bits of the recoil that engage the flywheel are not retracting all the way and rubbing on the flywheel. BTW, the cover comes off by undoing screws from the underside. That big philips screw on the top of the cover does NOT need to be loosened. It holds the recoil assembly to the cover. You'll see once you get it off. Then I'd use a length of rope to start the engine without cover, and see if noise is still there.

Good luck, and let us know what you find!

Brent
