I have a 1988 Evinrude 115 outboard motor. The trim raises ok but when I try to lower it, the motor runs and squills sort-of but will not move. I can stand on the back of the motor and the extra weight will help the motor to lower while using the trim motor until it gets to the two trim arms ( I quess )and stops. Any ideas as to what is wrong? Seals??? Motor??? Low fluid?? and if so How dou you check the fluid level?? Blockage?? Shoot it or what????

Hey squid....don't shoot yet!!!

Check the fluid level first. On the side of the reservoir, you will see a big screw head. Raise the motor all the way up. Remove the screw. Lower the front end of the boat as far as you can to get the reservoir as level as you can. The correct level with the motor all the way up is even with the bottom of the screw hole.

To add fluid, squirt some in, replace the plug screw and lower and then raise the engine a couple times. This will bleed the system. Do the above a needed till the reservoir is at the correct level. Keep us posted.....and put the shotgun away. :)

I think it might be the brushes on your pump motor if it is not a fluid problem. If it raises good but won't lower it is probably the pump motor or the pump itself. You can pull some pump cylinders out of the housing and inspect the port holes for blockage, however there should be nothing there to block unless bad or contaminated oil has been used. Good luck

Hey there outboardjim! I would've thought that you would fill the reservoir with the motor down instead of up. If you fill it when it's all the way up, won't there be too much oil in the pump and blow out the cylinder packings upon lowering? If i'm wrong let me know. I've always filled with the motor down.
