I have recently purchased dory with a 1990 60 hp Evinrude. I had problems with the idle and discovered that the thermostat had been removed. I refitted a new stat and now find the engine is overheating. I have removed the stat cover and run the engine and get good gush of water. The tell tale is flowing well. Any help appreciated. Should I take the head off? What about deflectors?

Re: 1990 60 HP Evinrude Overheating

Had a friend with same problem on a Mercury 50hp. He tried to back flush through thrermo housing with lower unit removed and also tried air pressure(made up a cover and gasket combo). This didn't help. Water impeller had already been replaced.
Suggested he get a manual from mercury which he did and he ended up pulling head and found an obstruction(never did tell me what it was) must of been ashamed or something?
Suspicious that thermo was missing?
