Default 96 evinrude 225hp v6 looper...upper crank bearing

I have a 1996 Evinrude 225hp v6 looper that just got rebuilt. The powerhead remanfacturer called me today with what he called the cause of the original powerhead failure. This was the powerhead that had an upper crank bearing failure about three months ago. Anyway, they said that I needed to check the little rubber hose that connects the lower crankcase bearing to the upper crankcase bearing. It has a oneway check valve inline that supplies the upper crank bearing with lubrication. I disconnected the upper line right below the flywheel and sure enough there was no oil in the line. I now have about 4 hours on the new powerhead and there has been no lubrication to the upper crank bearing. with the line disconnected i cranked up the motor on muffs and there was no oil coming out the the line. I can tell that this line and check valve was not replaced with the new powerhead. Will running the new powerhead for about 4 hours like this cause permanent damage to the upper crank bearing? Will the motor be ok if i just replace the line and check valve? Please help!!!!

yes, bearings need lubrication. a bearing can wear out in less than a minute if it's running dry. remove the checkvalve, and see if you can blow through it, and either clean it or replace it, cheaper than a new engine job.

you need to check all the recic. fittings and valves.the omc manual has a great procedure for this in a 1994 manual.

That should have come on the remanufactured powerhead. Have the remanufacturer send you one! At least hes aware of the cause of the original problem. It was very good of him to call. All of the recirc valves should have come with it too as well as a new pulse limiter. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I just need to know if there should be oil in the line were it connects to the upper crank bearing after sitting for about 5 days? There was none in the line when I removed it to check. When I cranked the motor no oil was coming out. however, i did see a couple of small puffs of white smoke. When i grab the flywheel and rotate it back and forth or side to side there is no slop in it. (there shouldn't be) Would there be slop in it if the bearing had not been lubricated? Thanks.

Just a thought. Is the oil being push up through the line from the bottom or is it being sucked up from the top?

the book shows the flow on 1 of the check valves going up from the bottom to top bearing.

I pulled the line that runs from the bottom of the crank to the top and the hose and valve seem to be working properly. I also used a syringe to shoot oil in the bottom of the line and valve and it flows through the valve like it is supposed to. I also injected oil into the lower and upper crank nipples and there is no blockage.I reinstalled the line with it full of oil above the valve and ran the engine about two minutes. Turned it off and disconnected the upper part of the line and there was no oil in it. Shouldn't there be oil in that lne all of the time??Still don't have an answer on how to check the recirc. valves or on what page it is addressed in the clymer manual. Please help.Thanks.

I called technical support at Bombardier, Evinrude outboard division. There was a REAL person that answered the phone. NO WAIT. The tech said that at idle speed there may not be any oil in the line. However, as I increase rpm's the vaccum created in the crankcase would draw the unspent fuel/oil in the bottom of the crankcase up to the top bearing. I guess they used to route the unspent fuel/oil out the exhaust system on the older outboards. This motor recirculates the unspent stuff through the crankcase adding additional lubrication to the crank.

I guess the Bombardier rep did not tell you that the vacuum source for "pulling" the oil up thru the hose to the upper bearing is a passageway from the upper bearing housing to the #2 cylinder manifold.
