55 hp johnson dies when enguaged

the moter seems to run ok out of gear but when enguaged it dies out or has no power. the fuel is new and the mix is ok this boat was sitting for 3 years but ran good befor it was stored so i am told. it is a 1976 johnson 55 hp model 55el76e. any info on what to check first second or third would be helpful. poss timing or fuel ??? if so any specs. would help. Thanks AC

clean carbd new plugs it should run fine . i have a79 sit for 7 years all i did was clean carbs& new plugs. yes i did replace the fuelpump. but it was still running the bulb just wouldnt pump up . it was pumping gass in to the block. papasage

papasage thanks for the reply the plugs were new and i just pulled the carbs and they looked good inside but i sprayed and blew them out so i will have to see if it helped. thanks AC
