at its time, was this a good motor or did it fall off the dependable johnson shelf?
am looking at 75 to 100 hp motor for the T166, and was wanting to keep it of the same era.
-
but if the 78 to 82 j/e had problems- ill go newer.
would like something that is easy to work on, but yet dependable.

That's the standard Evinrude/Johnson V4, which was a pretty good motor. Watch the thermostats - they stick on those & are a bear to change. When the motor's fully warmed-up you should be able to rest your fingers on the cylinders for a couple seconds, but it should be HOT (around 140 degrees F). Good luck!

Really depends on what shape this particular motor is in. They made a virtually identical motor, as the 88SPL and then 90SPL, up until I think 1998, so buying newer won't necessarily get you a better design. 1978 was the first year for that series of V4 (dual powerpacks, dual thermostats, all-mechanical LU, etc.).
