Default Checking spark on an Evinrude

I need to sort out some problems on my 78 Evinrude 85hp. I have been told to check the spark by removing the spark plug boot and inserting a screwdriver into the boot. Then hold the shaft of the screwdriver 1/2 inch from the block and see if the spark jumps the 1/2 inch gap. Is this the best way to test spark? Also are Craftsman screwdrivers "insulated"? If not what is an insulated screwdriver? Thanks in advance.

You can go to any auto parts store and get a "spark tester" for 5 or 6 bucks. Clips to block bolt, hook wire to it...... Handy to have. Good Luck

iluvgear,I've been wondering the same thing. It seems like a "Mickey Mouse" way to do it but I have heard it from alot of mechanics to do it like that. I'm scared to do it like that because I know these outboards will light your a-- up!!If you find a better way let me know, because I want to check mine.Later:Jason

Instead of a screwdriver just use a good spark plug. Hold it next to the block and watch for spark across the gap.

A timing light will work fine to see if that cylinder is firing any at all, but these guys are talking about checking the strength of the spark. They say it should jump 7/16" if it is putting the right amount of spark to that cylinder.Jason
