71 johnson 50 hp

the motor runs and starts pretty good with the cover off, but put the cover on and it will not idle. The cover is not pinching anything and there is nothing blocking the intake. Where do I start?

I have a 73 and had the same problem I took the carbs and made sure that the carbs stay open the same amount at low and full speed one might be closed all the wich may cause it to shut off you have a idle pin in the front of each carb screw them all the way in and then screw them out 1/4 turn and keep turning them out till the motor idles the way you want

You may also have an exhaust leak under the bonnet. That will cause poor idle.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

Thanks I'll try turning tcarb screws all the way in then back out. i don't think i have an exhuast leak, i don't see any smoke or anything like that comming out from the top end, is there another way to make sure i don't have a leak?
