Hello, I'm trying to help a friend getting his 4hp Evinrude to run properly. This motor was made in Belgium and has got the following numbers: 45B36A B23810. Does anyone know the age of this motor? I starts very quickly when I pull the string and runs well until I try to close the choke. The choke valve has to be totally closed in order to keep the motor running. The tank vent is open, the carburator has been cleaned. The sparks look fine but the motor simply won't run unless I choke it. What's next step?

If you're sure the carburetor is clean, then what ever is suppose to get the fuel too the carb isn't working. I don't know if that engine has a fuel pump, gravity fed or has a pressurized tank. What ever it is, isn't working.

c/6

Hooty

hey, i have the same problem with my 75' 4hp evinrude (which is gravity fed). I put a new filter in the fuel hose line, and the fuel seems to be going through now. But it wont start now, how would I go about 'cleaning the carborater'? thanks.

I've used automotive carb cleaner spray into the carb and some automotive carb cleaner liquid into the tank with fresh gas and oil. (There's probably a spray cleaner specific to two cycle outboards, but I've never noticed any ills from using the automotive stuff). Often it's just the gas/oil mixture gumming up over time if it is not removed before storage. Also, open up the area containing the float and clean it too.

If that doesn't work, you need to take off the carb and dismantle it. Spray carb cleaner into all the ports/holes. You may need a carb kit, but I have gotten away with never needing one on these small engines.
