1969 4 hp johnson will not idle

i have a 1969 4 hp johnson mod 4w69 s/n e314713 new points set ar .020, new condinsors,new plugs j4 type. runs great at high rpm but when i slow down to idle its stops. like low speed jet pluged? pulled carb cleaned and rebuilt. same trouble. put a carb from another 4 hp johnson that will idle down on and same trouble. have great blue spark thanks doug

doug,<br /><br />Non idling issues are almost always carburetion.<br /><br />Does it make a difference if you choke it slightly?<br /><br />If you have a cork carb. float, I would replace it with the new style.

I had the same problems with my johnson '76 (6HP) I cleaned the carb again with air pressure and clean fuel. After that turned the idle needle 1 1/2 back from seated, started the engine and turned the needle til it idles. Now it's on 2 1/4 back turned form seated. Chekc if if have the same carb is I do carb picture I hope you can do something with this info.<br /><br />Dennis

Doug do you have lots of water coming out of your exaust ports ? My 4HP would not idle till I cleaned the ports. this gives less back pressure.
