Default 76 evinrude pull cord spring HELP!!

I am trying to put a new spring for my manual start pull cord. The spring is the one that winds up and is sandwiched between two other pieces. Does anybody know an easy way to install it. I can't seem to get the spring wound up far enough to put it inbetween the pieces. Also is there anything you have to do once you get it in? Any special adjustments or anything? Thanks for your help in advance.STONER

What horse power is your motor? This may make a huge difference.

I tried for about an hour today and all I did was wear my forearms out trying to get it rolled up small enough to go between the two pieces.

Hey stoner....springs can be muthas.Try this.....Take the end of the spring that attaches to the starter pulley, thats the part the rope winds around, and put it through the slot in the cup. Attach the starter pulley to the spring and put the starter bolt through it with a large nut at the bottom to hold it together. Now start winding the pulley counterclock wise. The spring should roll right up into the cup. Don't let go of the pulley until the spring is all wound up in the cup. Sometimes I use the rope to get it going good and then rewind the rope. Holding the starter in a vice will help also.

Stoner, I hear your pain... I would take it to a dealer to do it, it takes them 10 minutes.I sincerely, and honestly HATE these recoil springs. I even have a small Suzuki 4 wheeler here with a bad timing chain, I was going to fix it, but pulling recoil out I by mistaken opened spring...well it's for sale now. I can take replacing a timing chain but these springs makes me loose my temper -FAST.
