What is the purpose of the spring-loaded carbon crank seal on the drive shaft? I see there is a rubber seal in behind it. Should a person grease the carbon seal before re-installing the power head? 1954 Evinrude 7.5. Thanks
Hi SparkyThe seal in question is your lower crankcase seal. The spring holds it in place. The rubber o-ring seals water and exhaust crud out of the driveshaft splines. You only need to greese the splines on the driveshaft. Do not get any greese on the end of the driveshaft, this could have a hydrolic affect and load the crankshaft. The seals need no lube.
I was going to ask about this myself. Does anyone know why the seal works like that? Why not a plain old oil seal? Is it to make it easier to change? Thanks!
Hi PaulI have no idea why. Ease of changing? I guess they are easy enough. I have owned a couple of these models over the years and have serviced and repaired many others. I can't remember having to install a new seal in one. My guess is by building the thing that way it saved money??
