How to adjust gear selector cable Evinrude 140 HP

I have fitted new gear selector cable, checked my Clymer manual guess what no info!!

What I did was adjusted it to the mid position between forward and reverse but it clunks into reverse. Is there a different method or is what I have done correct?

John,

Just make sure that the shift shaft has a full throw in both forward and reverse.

you didnt specify what year of motor, but this should basically apply.

1-if connected at motor disconnect.

2-move control to full forward position.

3-rotate prop & move lever on motor by hand into forward gear <back towards head> (depending on motor)

4-place shift cable on shift lever pin, washer, nut finger tite.

5-pull on cable casing to remove play & adjust trunnion nut <wheel> to slide into cable lock.

6-install lock cover & torque screw 60-80 inlbs <7-9nm> (depending on motor).

7-shift control to neutral

8-remove cable from lever pin on motor & make sure lower unit is in neutral.

9-reattach cable to lever pin with washer, locknut & tighten. just has to be tite.
