Re: lower unit

Hi John, The best way to drain the oil from the lower unit is to have the motor in the vertical position. Place a oil pan under the skeg to recover the old oil. To dispose of the oil bring it to your local evironmental center. There are two threaded plugs in the lower unit one upper and one lower. They look to be identical with a screwdriver slot in each plug. Remove the bottom plug and there should be a magnet attached to this plug and a nylon washer under the head. You may find some shavings clinging to the magnet - this is normal - chunks of steel is not normal. Clean off the magnet of any particles. Remove the upper plug let the oil drain but observe the color of the oil it should be dark in color and have an odor. There shouldn't be any milky color in the oil, if there is that means you have water in the oil. If you determine that you have water in the unit do not put in new oil. But, if the oil is good old oil get recommended oilfrom your outboard dealer and tell the salesman you want to fill your lower unit. Then he will give you the proper tube to fill the lower unit from the bottom plug and when comes out the top plug hole its full replace the lower plug then the upper plug. Wipe off any excess oil.
