I have a evinruse mate 2 outboard. Its around 1973 and 2 h.p.
It won't stay running. It dies after about 8 minutes when I run it in a bucket. Then it won't start again for about an hour. It starts up good, then starts to smoke a lot and there is a lot of black oil comming out of the exhaust. Then the engine changes pitch and dies. I used fresh gas, and oil mixing it 50:1. It has a built in gas tank on top. I took off the plug and looked at the piston, its pretty black with gunk. If its the carb, how do I clean it with taking it apart?
Any help please?
Scott

Mornin' serrano46572002,

if you are going to service the carb (and it ought to be done) and do it right, you need to remove the carb.

a service manual is a good idea. it will contain required info for servicing carb as well as other maintenance and repair. a link to service manuals is at the bottom of the page.

you probably ought to consider servicing the water pump as well. one rule of thumb suggests replacing the water pump impeller every year or two.

these links may offer some insight:
http://www.precisionserv.com/Outboards/Revitalization.htm
http://www.homestead.com/dolphinmarineservice/Tech.html
http://www.aomci.org/aomcfaq.htm (OLder motors)

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

Possibility that there is an electrical problem, when it gets warm it dies? And you said that it will not start for an hour, approximate time it takes to cool off. If it starts easily and runs for that long, it is not likely to be a fuel delivery problem especially since it wont start for an hour. I would check the coils for any cracks, and if it has the point and condensor system, I would replace those pieces.
