possible oil leak

I started my 1985 115 Johnson for the first time in 4 months. It was sitting in my driveway and I started it 3 or 4 different times for about 5 minutes each time (I used water ears). When I got up the next morning, there was a 3" oil spot under the prop. What could be doing this? Thanks.

Re: possible oil leak

Hi, Ruffis.

No worries.

It is normal for 2 stroke engines to exhaust some oil when running and to have some accumulate in the exhaust housing to leak out later.

A 3" puddle is quite normal for a 115 Johnny.

Good luck. :)

Re: possible oil leak

Hello Ruffis,

JB is absolutely right on the oil spot after running. The only thing I would add is make sure the spot is dark or black in color. If it is the color of the gear lube the bearing carrier may have leaked (common in that vintage) and when the motor was tilted down (if it was up during the 4 months) it would allow the lube to run out on the driveway.

Have a great day!
