Default 1988 40HP Evinrude primer tube.

After several hours of searching and reading this forum, I found my problem!!Here's the deal... the rubber hose that runs from the primer solenoid to a "manifold" next to the fuel/vro pump, has been pinched behind the starter and has a hole in it. Obviously this can't be good and I'll fix it in the morning... will this cause the engine to have a hard time revving??? The engine runs fine until you give it much throttle, then it refuses to rev up. If the rubber hose that I described above has a hole in it,I don't see how that can keep it from revving because it should rev for a few seconds until the carb bowls are emptied... correct??Obviously I'm gonna find out for sure tomorrow, anyone have other thoughts? Thanks,Randy

Not very clear on what hose you are referring to as the primer hose should run to the VRO. The hose running from the "manifold" as you described, should be connected to the air motor on the VRO.Check out the explanation by Clanton on this link. It might be what you are referring to. hose worn

First of all, thanks for the reply.... the "manifold" I'm referring to is at the VRO pump, it's a peice of plastic that has a larger tube coming from the VRO pump, a small tube going to the top carb, a small tube going to the primer solenoid, and a small tube going to the lower carb... in that order. The tube that has the hole in it, is the middle tube going to the primer solenoid.Sorry about calling the plastic, multi-tube fitting, a "manifold"... that's pipe-fitter slang for any common pipe that branches in mutiple directions.

Randeye Any air leaks in the system will cause problems. It will cause the engine to run lean and contribute to the conditions you describe. Repair the hose and try it again. Might be a good time to inspect all the other hoses or replace them now before they fail. That is a common problem of the VRO's being blamed for failure.

Thank you rudeafrican and Rick.I'll replace the hose, check for other hose problems, grind the starter mounting plate for clearance, and give her another whirl.Randy
