I have a 1982 20ft Grady White with the original 1982 175hp Johnson outboard. The engine has not been rebuilt and the compression is low in one of the cylinders, some water in there years ago says the previous owner. When I first started it up this year when on blocks it fired right up. Now that it is in the water it takes 10 min to get her going. I think I have primed the gas ballon and choked it engough but it is really unreliable. Once she is running things are ok. Is it time to put this Johnson to rest?? How many years do these kinds of outboards run without a major overhaul?? I do not want to spend a dime more on this engine, way to sluggish. Any help to these questions would be great. Thanks.
