I have a 1965 Evinrude 18HP Fastwin electric start motor. The serial number is 18402D-F06132. When shifting into forward gear it will pop out into neutral. I adjusted the linkage but that did not help. Any ideas as to what the problem may be? Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Pretty sure you have a bad shift dog or clutch dog as some call it. That is the part that slides between the forward and reverse gear to engage them. Both the clutch and gear could be worn. It is a fairly straight forward repair with a manual.
Steelspike nailed it. Bad clutch dog. You'll have to go into the lower unit to replace it.If you want to do it yourself, hail Joe Reeves on this board. He may have one or can advise you if this model year clutch dog can be turned around.
