engine bogs down

i have a johnson 1976 70 hp engine that idles fine but when i put her in gear she sputters and shuts down the only way i can get her to go is to gun it from the neutral position this has to be something simple right?

Howdy, JWTF.<br /><br />I would get a manual and do the linkage and synchronization procedure. Your ignition advance may be coming in late or not enough.<br /><br />Make sure that all three cylinders have good spark and see what happens if you squeeze your primer bulb when trying to accellerate.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

JB's input is worth gold. <br /><br />My humble addition would be to stop high RPM shifts from nuetral into gear. You probably don't want to add the cost of a new lower unit (gears) to your current 'to do' list. My 2 cents.
