Evinrude Overheat Question

Scenario: 1993 Evinrude 175, running at 2000-2500 rpms, overheat warning alarm sounded, but temperature gauge read normal. Water was streaming(appeared normally) from the pump indicator out of the motor. Alarm stopped, then changed to "no oil" alarm, and motor stopped in a cloud of smoke with a "pop."<br /><br />Several parts, wires, and plugs melted, indicating severe overheat. Oil injector was working, steady stream coming out, no obvious obstructions to the water intake. Any clue on causes? Thanks.

Re: Evinrude Overheat Question

Sounds like you had a wire shorting out and caused the alarms to go off and then began to burn and the POP was probably the main fuse blowing. Check Motor for shorted wiring or where a wire COULD have been shorting out. I know it may be hard now that the wires are fried, but you need to find out which one caused it and repair it before you start it back up. Replace any wires that are obviously burned!

Re: Evinrude Overheat Question

Could be that intake obstruction fell off when motor stopped. Also VRO failure could have ocurred that caused overheat even if alarm sounded late.Don't understand what you mean by oil injector was working .Another possibility is that thermostat was stuck closed.Did you verify by removing cowling after failure that engine was in fact hot?

Re: Evinrude Overheat Question

The water cooled regulator may have shorted out and caused the burned wires. Was the tach acting funny just before this?<br /><br />Once you check it out, let us know!
