I looked thru parts books from 1954 to 1975, lots of kits for the different HP engine, my best guess is the gen with regulator made under 20 amps.

hmmm wonder how much under 20 amps..If its not much under, then it might be ok... say 15 from that, plus the 9amps from the inbuilt one.. and we are starting to talk about acceptable power...just gotta figure out how to get the two to play nicely together...rgdsFrank

If it's the original generator (gjg-4001m or gjg-4002m) then it puts out 10A max. The field coil consumes 1.7-1.9A, which is included in the 10A figure. It should kick in at around 1500rpm engine speed. Your electric LU could consume up to 2.5A (~2.2A typical) of that 10A when in gear.Hope this helps!

Your reply came through while i was posting. If by inbuilt you mean the one under the flywheel - that's just a magneto to run the ignition only! It does not charge the 12v system at all. In fact the 12v system is completely independant & not connected to it.

Hi Paul, The 40HP 63 rude is an external gen selectric. The number on this Gen is:GJG 4008M 12V by Prestolite. Is that also only 10Amp??I propose to put it into a 100ESL72 Johnson 100HP 1972.This has no external charger, it must be under the flywheel.i know there is one because the voltage at the battery goes up when the motor is running and also I read somewhere ages ago that it has either a 4 or a 9 AMP charge, (can't remember which, but both suck pretty badly).I would like to make up a bracket and mount the evinrude gen into the 100Hp (main reason being that I have not found a alternator that is only 7cm in diameter.)... mounting it is no problem I can handle that, also I should be able to handle swapping the toothed pully over to the 100HP's flywheel..Its wiring up the two systems so the voltage increases of both don't interfere with each other.(If I can't have both, and the 4008M is only 10Amp, then I think I will have to do something else. (like rewind the stator) to get more power out..Have you any idea about the 4008M gen?

Sorry, I dont know anything about the gpg-4008m generator. I noticed API Marine sells a replacment generator that covers 4001 and 4008 if that means anything ( catalog page ). You may be able to connect the two charging systems by using a pair of diodes to isolate them (so that one can't feed into the other). I don't have any experiance doing this but I can't see why it would be a problem. To be on the safe side you may need to put some high wattage, low resistance resistors in each line to, but I really doubt it would be neccessary.Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Oh, I forgot to ask - How would you change the flywheel pulley? I thought it was part of the 40's flywheel??PS - Ive been using Linux in various flavours since the early 90's. Those poor sops don't know what they're missing!

It seems it might be easiest to just buy the biggest ColdCrankingAmps CCA starting battery and charge it when you get home at the end of the day. That would pretty much run it all day even with no charging.

Hi guys I am going to assume that its 10 amps (the gen)and not bother with it.. not enough to warrent the modification. Also, I spoke to some people about stator rewinds, and for 250USD, I can go from 9amp to 12 amp.... which still sucks.Yepblaze, I stay out for 2 and sometimes 3 days. I have a small solar panal on the roof of the boat to trickle charge the batteries... but it doesn't add very much. but I guess it'll have to do unless I find a really small car alternator.Thaks for the help guys.rgdsFrankPS, Paul, it is part of the 40's flywheel, but with the right equipment I could rectify that. :-)and you are right.. people who have not tried linux don't know what they are missing. I've been using it for about 8 years now.

Hello. You might want to try a different regulator before you rewind the generator. It is the regulator that does not let more than 10 amps through.I use a 4002 on my '57 seahorse. The power usually pops up to 10 amps when it goes up to 18, 19 hundred rpm. But since you do not need any juice to run the engine it is really a bonus and ten amps is a lot to use on fish finder and trolling motor. www.twincityoutboards.com sells the sets fairly cheap, but they do work.Just try and keep the automotive stuff away from your rig, because one spark means that it is time to swim.I have tried to use two charging systems in tandem and somehow they mostly phase each other out instead of giving additional power.I have not yet figured out why that is.

This has been discussed on various postings before. Most folks with these engines do not add generators. Rather, they use home-charged batteries, which are fine for many starts. I charge my battery about every three or four times out. Now, if you have other accessories, you may need multiple batteries....
