I have a 1976 Johnson 40HP model # 40E76. I hit something, kicking up the motor. After getting back into open water, motor starts & runs fine, and moves forward & reverse at idle. As soon as I come up off of idle, motor races and motion ceases, as if the prop stops turning. (And no, it's not the shear pin.) Is there a clutch disc or something that is slipping above idle RPM?

you have probably spun your prop. the prop is pressed on the hub with a piece of rubber between it and the hub to protect the lower unit in the event that you hit something...the rubber will give first. sounds like your case. You can have it fixed. do a search of this forum on spun prop for more info.

Rich

Thank you iRich! You were spot-on! New prop installed & working fine. I apologize to group for not finding similar problems & solutions on the forum; I must not have been searching on the proper keywords.
