Default 1973 Evinrude 140HP - Oily Discharge from Exhaust

I have recently purchased a '73 Evinrude 140, Model No: 135383M, Serial No: A87460. A workshop manual has been ordered. I've had trouble starting it, it wouldn't fire, despite cranking over. I eventually found no spark. From the advice given to others I hunted down the Black Yellow wire, and disconnected it from the power pack. It started and run, so I have a good idea of where to solve this problem. Now, I notice in the collective pool of water behind the motor there appears to have been an oily discharge with the exhaust gases. It appears to be a pale brown color. Is this normal? The motor hasn't been used for awhile.

g'day mate (fellow aussie)did the oil appear when you fist got it going after you had been cranking it as this may have built up exess oil in the exhaust and when you started it it would have expelled it (may be)or have you checked the gear case oil for water contamination or leakage cheers mateDaryl ps from gunnedah nsw

Hi Darryl,As I only ran it for a few minutes I'd say it occured straight away, and yes, it could have been a build-up. I'm yet to check the condition/level of the oil in the L/U.Regards, Graeme

Hey gclemt...Hows things downunder?Fishin is probably correct say'n it's from the exhaust. Not all the oil gets burner during ignition and whan the motor is upright has a tendancy to leak out through the exhaust. The heavier the oil mix the more puddle you can get. Stay with the 50:1 mix.Got to tell you guys I spent some time in Sidney back in 1970. Went there for R&R. You guys got a great country there.Jim.

Just as a follow-up to my query, the oily discharge turned out to be excess fuel. This was caused by the hoses to the fuel pump being incorrectly fitted. I was getting enough fuel to idle (in a fashion) but the motor wouldn't pull and just died when the throttle was opened. Once corrected, and with the carbys cleaned out, the old motor runs perfectly, not a beat missed, no more discharge!!!
