What are the steps I need to take to do this, is there anything I need to make sure I don't do during the test?

Remove all the plugs. Keep spark plug wires away from you so you dont get shocked during the test. Attach the gage and turn the motor over several times 5-6 to get the reading. Log info and repeat for the other cylinders

Generally a good idea to disable the ignition before cranking the motor. ;)
Backlash

Actually, I've heard of instances of blown power packs as a result of cranking with ungrounded plug wires.
Backlash
