The shifting and throttle is the same, the harness from control is different, but OMC had an adapter for that, or you can cut the wires and hard wire it. The later model harness has delco packard connections instead of the large red connector, and more tan wires for the system check tach. Your tach and other guages should work.

Clanton is correct, but it is recommended to get the wiring adapter because you will also need the 2" 4-lite warning gauge for the SystemCheck or a new tach with the lites in it. The oil tank, or the pickup assembly, will have to be replaced because of different electronics internally.

No, with VRO disconnected only three sensors remaining, 2 overheat 1 fuel restriction, old tach should work fine, self test on old horn should also work. After you get the engines running, I would remove powerpack cover and check for arcing between the ignition coil and steel plate that covers the pack, I see a lot of this. Id it is just i cylinder, the engine will drop 300 rpms each time it misfires.

Seahorse do you know of information letter or SB that covers the change in the remote tank sensor. I seen something, but cant find the info. Am I missing this in the service manual? While you are looking SB number for the sparkplug changes.

Thanks
Clanton

In '96 when they went to the SystemCheck warning, the tank sender became an on-off switch and the electronics are now in the SystemCheck gauge assembly. The Parts and Accessory Catalog shows the adapters needed. You will also need an adapter if you do not use the 4lite SystemCheck gauge and driver (horn).

Clanton, what's the "fix" for the arcing problem? Is it limited to the '02 models, or could I experience it on my '01 150?

Re: 2002 johnson 150's from 1992's

Beernutz, I have seen it on V4/V6 1992 thru 2000 engines, I just replaced the coil, I think it is a quailty control problem on the coil insulation. It could also be caused by too much sparkplug gap and checking spark by pulling the boot off with engine running, both cause high voltage at coil.

Clanton,

The QL78YC sparkplug recommendation for all looper motors 40hp and above came out in 1995. The OMC Parts and Accessory Manuals and '96 and later engine parts manuals have shown these plugs.

Capt. Manny,

By all means use a System Check gauge, either the 2" or the tach with the warning lites.
