hello gentleman , i have replaced my 1985 evinrude 120 hp powerhead with 1995 120 hp powerhead the 85 models timing was set at 22 deg but i am not sure if this is the correct timing for the 95. i do have a omc manual but it only covers to 1990. thanks in advance
1995 parts book does not show a 120HP engine. 1994 OEM manual calls for 18 +- 1 degree. If powerhead came from OMC or the BOMB it would have a part number to ID the block.
hello clanton i purchased this rebuild from a marine engine rebuilder in eastern canada he told me it was a 1995 120 p/head after installing it.i took it to a marine shop to have the timing set. they told me that the maximum advance they could get was 18 deg. so i replaced the fly wheel key because it was worn and was the probable cause of the maximum advance problem. i wish to reset it know, and have information on how to do so from one of the timing topics yesterday. i am now concerned that the p/head may not be 120 there is a h/power stamp on the old block. but the newblock has the h/power stamp machined off. is it posible that this 95 p/head could be wrong block ie:90 or 110 or even 130 if so would engine be same bore? and not mater

Re: 95 evinrude 120 v4 looper timing
90's and 110's are crossflows. The very first (1985) V4 loopers were timed at 22 degrees. If you are using the carbs and ignition (including flywheel) from the 1985 you can use the timing for those components. Call your supplier and go by his advise as he is holding the key to your warranty.Good luck!
At this point I agree with DH, go back to rebuilder, The first thing I would want to know is what year the powerhead realy is. With the parts and service manuals I have, I cant find a 1995 120. I also cant remember if this engine has quickstart, if it does engine must be up to temp, or bypass quickstart to check max timing,
thank you for the info dhadley i am using all components from 85 p/head . all parts went on the new block no problem only thing that was different was some water plumbing that was attatched to the throttle. seemed to be some sort of diverter but was easely disconected and left off as new block had no way of attatching it.i will try to set timming at 22 deg
dhadley engine has quick start.i thought i could set timing with sparkplugs out and at w o t 4deg back of recomended timing as per yesterdays timing topick i will checkwith marine rebuilder for timing setting. however marine shop didnt no for sure but thought it should be 19deg

Re: 95 evinrude 120 v4 looper timing
OK. You have a 93 or newer V4 looper without the throttle controled water valve and cross over hose. All the V4 loopers at that time were basically the same. I would still ask the warranty gods first. Unless you got it free and he has plenty more.Good luck!
dhadley engine remote has quick start feature push in key for primer. is this not quick start .i have noticed before replacing power head that idle speed would not increase when cold and key pushed in. but it did seem to add more gas
