Evinrude to Mercury Control Compatibility

I have a Lowe 18' bass boat with a 1990 Evinrude 40hp VRO motor. This motor is pieces due to someone trying to rebuild it and stopped in the middle and now many parts are missing. A friend of mine has an older Mercury engine and has offered it to me. Does anyone know if the controls are compatible or can be adapted between makers like that or will I have to buy a complete control system for a Mercury.

Merc and OMC controls are not compatible. If you're using the Merc, you will need to get Merc controls for it.
