Hi-
I have a 100 hp 1979 Johnson outboard.
When I accelerate my boat from stop to gain speed it changes back to neutral a bit after planing. Any ideas what this could be?
It started doing this during this past weekend.
Thanks in advance-

If you're sure it's going into neutral (not a spun prop hub), it's probably clutch dog and/or forward gear are worn (usual cause is gentle, slow shifting ... neutral to forward should be done briskly ... F to R or visa versa requires a brief pause to allow the prop to stop rotating. If you haven't done this job before, it's time for as pro. The only other cause of popping out of gear is misadjusted cables/linkage, which usually only happens when someone has messed with the adjustments.

Thanks-
It seems that neutral to forward is working well. I will have to try this again to make sure.
