I have what I believe to be a 1988 8hp merc. The upper cylinder will not fire, so I swapped the coils and it still did not work. This leads me to believe the coils are good. I have checked all connections and they seem ok. Any ideas?????<br />One other question is, will this motor push a 12ft glass faster than a very early mod 10hp Johnson? and they seem ok. Any ideas?????

Have you checked the spark plug. It may be fouled.

The plugs are good...I was thinking that it could be the ign. box, but I don't know hot to test it.

It is either a bad switchbox or a bad trigger. There is a resistance test for the trigger. If that tests good then replace the switchbox. The switchbox is the most common cause.
