Hello fellow boaters, I have a 1996 175 hp Evinrude Ocean pro. It burns 3 gallons of oil for 20 gallons of gas.The plugs have oil on them too, and it smokes constantly. any suggestions as to stop it from smoking so much? It is oil injected.I don't mix the oil with the fuel.
I own a Johnson 175,1998, basically the same engine. One thing to remember is the 50/1 ration is an average. When going slow it may burn at 100/1, and wot it may go to 40/1. Bottom line, I mark my oil tank with a piece of tape. For the last 3 seasons when I add 50 gal of gas, it seems I need 1 gal of oil.My engine does smoke a little, my plugs are ok, and I'm told my smoke is normal, at least it getting lubrication. The ratio you mention seems like there is something wrong.
sounds like a fuel flow restriction, it is not pulling enough fuel, but an adequate amount of oil. Is it running ok otherwise??? I would check and make sure the gas tank is venting, that there are not pinched places in the gas line, filters are clean, etc.
DM,Your oil to fuel ratio is WAY OFF. You may have a problem with your oil/fuel pump. It's worth having checked out and/or replaced. As, J1esse mentioned, wouldn't hurt to lokk fopr fuel restrictions.
have you considered disengaging the vro pump and premixing?sounds like you might save some money if you don't want to start replacing the vro, or rebuilding it.that is way too much oil!
Most of the time, excessive oil use if from an air leak in the fuel system somewhere. A common problem is a rusted out spin-on fuel filter. The air-fuel mix going into the VRO has less resistance than liquid fuel and the pump cycles more often, each cycle shoots a certain amount of oil to the mix. Since there is less gas because of the air, the mixture is richer in oil.Put a clear piece of fuel line at the intake to the pump and run the motor. Look for bubbles in the fuel. A restriction can cause the same symptoms since not enough gas gets into the pump chambers.
Thanks for all of the responses. I replaced the fuel filter no change. I haven't replaced the VRO pump which I am getting alot of feedback on that. The fuel lines have been tighten. Thanks for all of the advice, DM
